PM: Went out from home on a longer run tonight, still quite easy though after yesterdays long run and race on Saturday. Went through Rhodes Minnis out to Wheelbarrow Town nr Stelling Minnis and back

AM: Distance:  6 miles        Time: 00:51:27     Ave Pace: 8.34 m/m
PM: Distance:  10 miles      Time: 01:18:50     Ave Pace: 7.53 m/m

Tuesday 19/02/13
AM: Easy Run 2 laps of Lyminge, felt a bit fresher this morning and pace was a little quicker than usual on my morning runs.
PM: First night in our New Club House, The Three Hills Sports Park. After a long wait we have finally made it and its our Monthly Club Handicap tonight as well.
Went off for warm up which was a bit shorter than normal. Then starting off  on 15 mins handicap it left me with a three minute gap on the next pair of Rona & Mick!!  Not quite the same zip as last time and I was about 10s per mile down – probably down to heavy weekend rather than having nobody to chase. However pushed on through and finally caught Rona at The Girls Grammar School on the 2nd lap and then managed to get past a few people towards the end. Afterwards did couple of miles cool down before going back to club for supper.

AM: Distance:  6 miles      Time: 00:47:55                 Ave Pace: 7.59 m/m
PM: Distance:  8 miles   Handicap Time: 0:26:35   Handicapp  Ave Pace: 5.59 m/m

Wednesday 20/02/13
AM: Easy run this morning only 1 lap as doing long run with Lucy tonight and wanted to loosen the legs up
PM: Long Run with Lucy tonight, bitterly cold and quite a strong easterly wind blowing. We parked in Tesco’s Cheriton and then made our way back into Folkestone up Cherry Garden Ave and then round top the East Cliff, first three miles were all pretty even into the wind 8.37/8.37/8.38. We then had a nice downhill section past then East Cliff Pavilion and down into the Durlocks round past the Harbour and onto the leas coastal footpath. Downhill miles were 8.17/8.17. Pace slowed a little along the Lower Leas path and into Sandgate as a bit darker and undulating to 8.37/8.22/8.23. However once we got onto the seafront with the wind behind us we managed to settle into a good pace all the way along to the Gravel Pit entrance about half mile the other side of Palmarsh Garage  - 8.11/8.09/8.09/8.12/8.10. Upon turning back to Folkestone we were running straight into the icy wind and pace dropped about 10s per mile to 8.22 & 8.23. Now into the last three miles along Seabrook Road we were really concentrating on not letting the pace slip any further and subsequently ran a bit faster logging 8.12 & 8.19. However the last mile was up the steep bit of Horn Street and after 17 miles Lucy began to feel the gradient and had to slow down so the last mile was 9.18, but a very respectable over time of 2hr 31mins which rougly equates to 2’48 for 20 miles and 3’41 for marathon!!!!

AM: Distance:  4 miles     Time: 00:33:41     Ave Pace: 8.25 m/m
PM: Distance:  18 miles  Time: 02:31:19     Ave Pace: 8.24 m/m

Saturday 23/02/13
We travelled up to Doncaster on the Friday evening and then made the 2 hour journey up to Sunderland on the morning of the race. Arriving in Sunderland we were greeted to a course covered in 2-3 inches of snow!! The ground was very wet and waterlogged as the snow was thawing and we had to put our tent up in a right muddy mess!! The ladies were off at 14;20 and our race was at 15:00 so as soon as they went to the start I started my warm up going part of the way round the course. Where all the juniors had run over the snow early most of it had melted and the course was now just sloppy freezing cold mud the whole way round. I managed to see our ladies go by on the first lap but by now I was beginning to lose the sensation in my toes on my left foot due to the cold.  Got back to our tent got my spikes on just about getting some feeling back into my toes before doing a few drills and strides, then off to the start (which was about 100m wide!!)

On the gun ran hard and by the first turn I could judge that I was well up the field and knew that I wouldn’t be able to keep that pace going all the way round so just ease of a little, there was mud everywhere and we were getting wet and truly splattered from the splash back from all the other runners, half way round the first lap my toes had gone on my left foot and were starting to go on my right. Most of the time it was head down just trying to make sure of your footing and not get stuck in the thick mud. By the end of the first lap I was now in a comfortable groove and heard a spectator shout that we were in the top 400 or so.  This really gave me a lift as at this point I was getting passed and was starting to go past a few people myself and I was now thinking if I did not lose to many more places I could have a good position at the end. At the end of the second lap I went passed a Tonbridge guy and this gave me a lift as it was another Kent runner, now I wanted to try and stay ahead of him and this helped round the last lap, by now it felt like all the strength had been sapped out of my legs and I was just going through the running motions and running on two stumps as all the feelings in both feet had gone and not returned. With about a mile to go the Woodford vet who I had a sprint finish with at the Southern’s last week went past and I tried to stay with him but couldn’t and he got about 14s on me by the end.  Coming round the last corner I could hear all the Tonbridge supporters going mad as the guy who I had overtaken early went back past me and even mustering my sprint finish I could still not get back to him, as he was 24 years younger than me I’ll let him off that one.  So finished absolutely caked in mud, freezing cold but quite happy I had a good run, frustratingly as these events are now chip timed you don’t know where you came until you see the results. However I managed to find a copy as we were leaving and my position was 327th which I was overjoyed about as by previous best had been 411th at Alton Towers. However it didn’t take look to start thinking that another 35s and 28 places and I could have been in the 200’s!!!!!  Oh well that’s what keeps us coming back for more!!!  Splits: 6.06/6.45/6.46/7.05/6.52/7.08/7.16/5.02
Travelled back to Leeds about an hour and a half drive and finally got the feeling back in my toes with the radiator blowing on them at about 19:30.  We then went out and had a nice curry.

Needed to get a long run in this week, so did 18 with Lucy on Wednesday, which was probably to close to the National, but the Marathon is the “Bigger Picture”. So subsequently had day off on Thursday to recover and on Sunday for travelling home. These are the first days that I have not run since Marathon training started at the beginning of December!!  Next week we have the Thanet 20 so long run will be a race!

10 Weeks to go........W/b 11 February 2013

Monday 11/02/13
AM: No Run had to get 06:30 train to London with Elly

Tuesday 12/02/13
AM: London again this time drove up to Greenwich with Elly.
PM: 2 mile warm up making our way from the club to the Leas, where we had ago at the Yasso 800’s. The idea is you run 8x800m with 90s recovery then take the average time and that should equate to your marathon time roughly. My efforts were 2.45/2.45/2.48/2.45/2.49/2.52/3.02/2.48 giving an average of 2.49 thus should equate to 2hr 49m marathon. Please as this is sort of time I would be happy with at London. Then did cool down jog back to the club.

Saturday 16/02/13
After a good trip up to Parliament Hill by train, we arrived at a rather soggy Hampstead Heath. We just about managed to find a dryish piece of ground to put our tent up on. We organized the youngsters who were doing the earlier races but showing them the course and doing the warm ups.
Whilst the ladies were doing their race I managed to get my warm up in and was able to give them a shout from various points round the course.
Then it was time for my race, the start had been brought forward from previous years to half way up the hill so we had even less time to prepare for the bottle- neck at the top of the hill. I took the first lap a little bit easier than usual, as this is the longest XC on the calendar at 9 miles. Some parts were very soft and this was particularly hard work especially on the up hill parts, there we a couple of parts that were firmer towards the end of each lap and here I managed to be able to pick up my pace a little. Started to pass a few people on the second lap and was feeling a little stronger and managed to keep this up into the third lap and felt like that I was moving up the field.  Had a particularly good finish down the last hill and into the home straight and was in a dramatic sprint finish to the line with a guy from Woodford Green. I has just edged past him on the finish line by a couple of inches, but when I saw the results I was behind him with the same time, the only thing I can think is that I lead with my micro chipped leg over the line and my opponent lead with his chipped foot!!!! Doh
However finished in 134th position, my best ever. Ok the field might have been smaller due to the rearrangement and being a week before the Nationals, but at the end of the day you can only race who was there!!!

Sunday 17/02/13
AM: Long run with Tim, Angela & Lucy. The girls went straight off out up Park Farm Road and Tim and I went round Radnor Park then up Blackbull Road with the intention of then catching the girls up along the usual route. My first couple of miles were a bit slow as was still stiff from yesterdays cross country race. However soon worked into it and we were soon down into the 7:30 m/m pace. We caught up with the girls along Seabrook Road near St Saviours Hospital. Angela was going to turn at the Light Railway Station, Lucy at the Prince of wales Pub and Tim & I went out to the Redoubt Fort at the beginning of Dymchurch. The return home was a little harder as we were running into the wind but wanted to try and maintain the pace. Miles 12-16 were all run between 7.23 and 7.28 m/m pace. I suffered a bit going up Sandgate Hill as my quads had worked hard up the hills yesterday and I had no power in them today and I lagged behind Tim and the mile split dropped to 8.12, however we picked it up over the last mile and finished with a 7.28.  This gave us an average pace of 7.35, which gave Tim a huge boost. Lucy had finished about a couple a minutes before us, and was expecting us to catch her up!!

AM: Distance:   18.0 miles      Time: 02:16:38     Ave Pace: 7.35 m/m

Saturday 09/02/13
My favorite cross-country course, as it is quite technical twisting and turning and up and down short banks.  Did a couple of laps warm up, in dry cold conditions, however as we lined up it began to drizzle with rain making it feel very cold. Went out hard on the first lap and was well up the pack and settled in behind Paul Hasler of Paddock Wood, who has well beaten me all season and was leading the Vets League table.  I was expecting him to pull away but about half way round the first lap I managed to get in front of him and this was quite a boost for me and also I could see the great V50 Graham Saker of Tonbridge not to far ahead. Really had to dig in on second lap as it felt a bit harder probably paying for going off too hard but hung in there getting ready for the last lap, with some good people behind me this spurred me on over the last lap and did not get passed by anybody and finished 28th, my best league position all season. To cap it off well I came 13th overall in Senior Men’s League Table and 2nd in the Vets category :-

Sunday 10/02/13  -  Deal Half Marathon

AM: Didn’t want to race hard this morning as did the Cross Country yesterday, so decided to unofficially run this event with Lucy to give her some moral support. We jogged from the HQ at Fowlmead down to the start and then around the start area getting about a mile in as warm up.  It was a bitterly cold day with a strong SW wind blowing and after the gun Lucy quickly got into her stride covering the first two miles in 7.22 & 7.20, then the hills started and we were more or less running straight into a headwind and the next mile slowed to 8.01, but with a downhill following this the pace picked up again and we got back to 7.30 for mile 4. Due to the nature of the course we could see the next big hill looming up and it seemed to go on for ever, the pace dropped again and Lucy said that she was starting to feel tired, however we had caught the guy ahead but he would not let us go passed, every time Lucy moved up to his shoulder he speeded up a bit. I could tell that this was winding her up a bit so she finally put a bit of a spurt on and went clear of him, this helped to pick the pace up again having just done 8.21 up the hill the little battle had brought mile 6 down to 7.44 .  In the distance we could see ‘Cads’ and he didn’t seem to be pulling away from us and I was trying to work out the gap, which was in the region of 30 seconds. We went passed the Half Way point in 50:06 which would mean a 1hr 40m run, which was well within her 1hr 45m target. Anyway we were starting to go downhill now and the 7th mile was passed in 7.36.  We were trying to relax the shoulders and arms whilst at the same time trying to pick up the cadence of the legs on these down hill parts and astonishingly miles 8,9,10 & 11 went past in 7.17, 6.49!!! 7.03 and 7.10 – at one stage we had closed the gap down on Cads to 10 seconds but he had a crafty look over his shoulder and put his head down and started to pull away again.  We had also closed the gap on the other women in the race and we could see the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th ladies lined up ahead, we managed to get past one and literally onto the back of the next. After going passed Tim, his Kids and Kirsty who were supporting at mile 11,the final hill came into view as we turned the corner. Lucy’s hip was now starting to hurt her but with the encouragement that there were only two miles to go she dug in well, we went past mile 12 in 7.44 and now only had a downhill mile to the finish, she could not quite get back to the 6th lady but tried valiantly really picking the pace up again going through mile 13 in 7.03, the last 0.1m was a sprint for the line to try and beat the clock which she managed to do getting 01:37:58!!!!! J  As she crossed the line she was given a Spot Prize (alright for some hey!!).  7th Lady overall & 1st U23

Wanted long run to be little longer but so cold after half marathon couldn’t face getting out and doing anymore, however with race on Saturday and fairly even paced run on Sunday quite happy.  Now half way through 20 week schedule, next week will be a lower week as in London a couple of days with Elly and the Southern XC which were postponed are now next weekend. Also psychologically it would be good to have a lower mileage week in readiness for bringing in the faster paced runs in the next mesocyle.
