Sunday 27/01/13  -  CANTERBURY 10

AM: Been looking forward to this race all week as first Road Race of 2013 and wanted to get some gauge as to how my training had been going.  However when I woke up and heard torrential rain and gale force winds against the window I was not too impressed!!  But the forecast was showing sunshine by 11:00 so I lived in hope.
Got over to Canterbury in plenty of time and got number and chip before rest of team started arriving, I wanted to be ready to go out for my warm up at 10:00 as I wanted to get about 4 miles in. I ran out over the course to the 2 mile marker and then turned back to the start. Wind was still gusty but clouds were breaking up and sunshine was starting to come through, it was not cold though so just went for a vest!
Race got under way and I went off strongly but knew to let the lead group of about 5-6 runners go away as it was too fast for me, settled in behind Matt from Ashford and we went through first mile in 5.28, coming up to the second mile a Beckenham Vet went passed me and I tried to go with him a bit as we were 1st and 2nd in the Kent Champs V40, this took us passed Matt and soon we were onto the long downhill stretch into Bridge.  I could not live with the Beckenham guy's pace down the hill and a 30m gap had opened by the bottom, I tried to then concentrate on the flat to keep the pace going and went through the 4th mile in 5:26. Then it was over the ford and up the first steep hill, although I was pushing on I felt distinctly tired going up this hill and was not really closing the gap to those in front, passed the 5 mile marker in 28:26 but the hill had taken its toll and this was the first mile over 6 mins in 6:07. Really trying hard to bring pace back up, just got under 6 mins again at mile 6 with 5:59 and following a downhill stretch into Bekesbourne the 7th mile was 5:40. However it was now up the second big hill and the effort expended in the last mile meant I was slowing up this one, got over the brow and gave a wave to Tim’s kids before turning back into the agricultural land and going through the eight mile in 6:27!!! Dear oh dear as JT would say!!  We turned a corner at about 8.5 miles and boom straight into a strong wind, Matt had now pulled back up onto my shoulder again and passed mile 9 in 6:06, I was trying desperately hard to try and stay with Matt over the last mile and tried to pick up the pace but he was gradually pulling away and even on the fast downhill section towards the finish I could pull him back to me but the pace had picked back up to 5:48 with a finishing of 58:42 and just 7 seconds behind Matt I was fairly pleased.

Came 9th overall and got 2nd Vet 40 and Silver Medal in Kent Champs.  Have had some heavy weeks recently and in this recover week still clocked up 74 miles so have to be happy with the result.

AM: Distance:   10 miles      Time: 00:58:42     Ave Pace: 5.50 m/m

Total Distance including warm up and cool down:  17 miles.

Next week higher week again with speed work in form of Club handicap, long run on Wed due to race at weekend – Ashford &District 10km. Don’t want to be presumptuous but would love 34 something here!!!

PM: Distance:  10miles     Time: 01:14:37     Ave Pace: 7.27 m/m

Friday 18/01/13
AM: Long run today, as trip to London planned on Sunday. Weather was absolutely freezing, strong bitterly cold northerly wind, but no snow. Didn’t feel exactly spritely and it again seemed a long slog all the way round. But the important thing at this stage was that the run was done!!!

AM: Distance:  20 miles      Time: 02:44:32    Ave Pace: 8.13 m/m

Saturday 19/01/13
AM: Cross Country – had to set up Lucy’s orienteering competition and went out and put all the points out around Dibgate Camp, once this was done Lucy & I took George back up to Dibgate for a run round. When everybody had finished we stopped and had lunch at the Britannia Pub, before going back out round the course to collect all the marker points back up.
PM:  Easy run 1 lap of Lyminge, it was freezing and the roads were like glass so paced was very slow indeed!!!

PM: Distance:  11.5 miles      Time: 01:37:34
PM: Distance:     5.5 miles      Time: 00:52:04     Ave Pace: 9.25 m/m

Sunday 20/01/13
AM:06:30  Meant to be going to London this morning with the Scouts to the Camping Exhibition at the Excel Centre. So got up early to get an easy run in. Not snowing when I started at 06:30 but by end of run it had started to come down!!  Again very slow pace as roads were treacherous!!

AM:09:20  London trip aborted due to adverse weather, Lucy Tim & Angela were going out to do a 14 miler and Lucy twisted my arm to go with them. So after a shower and some breakfast it was straight back out onto the roads. It was now snowing quite heavily but not to windy, and where it was laying it made it easier to run on rather than ice. We went from Folkestone down into Hythe, and just passed Seabrook we heard some shouts from behind, it was Kirsty who had been trying to catch us up for a couple of miles, so we stopped and waited for her. In fact she had been a few minutes behind us all the way round!!!!  Got back into Folkestone at about 13 miles and Lucy wanted to get an extra one in to make 14 so we did a loop passed Sports Centre to Cornwallis Ave and back.

AM: Distance:   4 miles      Time: 00:41:33     Ave Pace: 10.22 m/m
AM: Distance: 14 miles      Time: 02:14:54     Ave Pace: 9.42 m/m

This is the HIGHEST weeks milage I have ever run!!!  I think I'm starting to get stronger as not feeling so tired at end of this week as I did in the early 100 mile weeks. Pleased with speed session on Tuesday with slowest half mile rep at 5.50 m/m. So after another couple of heavy weeks will take a reduced week next week in readiness for the Southern XC Champs at Parliament Hill, can guarantee this will be a tough race especially if there is still snow on the ground!!

15 Weeks to go........W/b 7 January 2013

Monday 07/01/13
AM: No Run – Still tired from race & long run so decided to run just once today.
PM: Easy Run with Tim, Angela, Lucy & George, feeling a lot better tonight and stiffness in legs had gone!!

AM: Distance: 0 miles      Time: 00:00:00     Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m
PM: Distance: 7 miles      Time: 01:07:23     Ave Pace: 9.37 m/m

Tuesday 08/01/13
AM: Easy run, 2 laps of Lyminge very slow but feeling a lot better hills tonight!!!!
PM: Hill Session from Club, off up to Tesco’s then Military Ave & Military Hill down into Sandgate to the bottom of hill at Lower Sandgate Road. Circuit was hard up Lower Sandgate Road Hill & about 100m over top, then stop and turn for jog back to the top of the hill ready for second hill finishing outside Vets Surgery, then jog half way down Sandgate Hill to bench, then hard to Rectory at bottom of hill, turn left then jog back to start point to repeat. This was a continuous circuit for 25 minutes. I managed 4 complete circuits (each circuit 0.85m) plus 1 hill. At end turned back and picked up other members of the group, everybody together at top of Sandgate hill then jog back via Grimston Road and Shorncliffe Road to Club House.

AM: Distance: 6 miles      Time: 00:52:47     Ave Pace: 8.48 m/m
PM: Distance: 9 miles      Time: 01:15:04     Ave Pace: 8.20 m/m

Wednesday 09/01/13
AM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge, not feeling too bad after last night’s hills.
PM: Longer run tonight and wanted to try and make it a bit brisker than some of my runs lately. Also fed up of Lyminge Country Lanes so drove down and started in Tesco’s car Park Cheriton, as I thought by going Horn Street to start with that should pick pace up and then I would try an maintain it as long as possible. So all going well pushed on into Hythe and up to the Light Railway Station, then back to Red Lion Sq and across Green and up to sea front (now about 4.5m) and still holding pace at around 7.00m/m. Then along seafront all the way through Seabrook, Sandgate and along promenade into Folkestone did a lap of the roads around the Burstin and by now was up to 10 miles and pace had remained constant and was 6.56 m/m average. Very pleased as not putting too much effort in and it seemed I was just floating along (don’t get that feeling often!!!).  Then as I had done hill session last night and I was starting to feel the pace I eased off up the Durlocks and into East Cliff and just ran easy for final 6 miles back round bypass, down Cherry Garden Avenue and across to Shorncliffe Road, then up to KAP across passed FHODS Tower Theatre and down Military Ave and back round to Tesco’s. Only had down to do 12 tonight but was feeling good so got 16 done!!!

AM: Distance:    6 miles     Time: 00:52:45     Ave Pace: 8.47 m/m
PM: Distance:  16 miles     Time: 02:00:51     Ave Pace: 7.33 m/m

Thursday 10/01/13
AM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge
PM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge, very tired after yesterdays long run so did another easy recovery run.

AM: Distance:  6 miles     Time: 00:53:06     Ave Pace: 8.51 m/m
PM: Distance:  6miles      Time: 00:51:20     Ave Pace: 8.33 m/m

Friday 11/01/13
AM: Easy run 2 lap of Lyminge.
PM:  Was going to do tempo run today, did the 3 miles of easy running but when tried to start the tempo and go faster found that stomach was very tender and did not feel that I could run at that pace so eased off after about half a mile.  However to take my mind off stomach I was running past a house at about 5.5miles and a Jack Russell came through the fence yapping, then proceeded to dart in and nip me on the shin which took me by surprise. It didn’t break the skin but there was blood under the skin and felt very bruised. But managed to get round rest of run.

AM: Distance:  6 miles      Time: 00:52:32    Ave Pace: 8.45 m/m
PM: Distance:  10 miles    Time: 01:25:01    Ave Pace: 8.31 m/m

Saturday 12/01/13
AM: Cross Country training up at Smeeth, very cold windy morning but dry at least. We did good warm up then a variety of various hills, long and short, followed by a cool down and then cakes and coffee.
PM:  Easy run 1 lap of Lyminge

PM: Distance:  7 miles      Time: 01:07:25
PM: Distance:  4 miles      Time: 00:33:18     Ave Pace: 8.19 m/m

Sunday 13/01/13
AM: Went out late morning an the wind was bitterly cold really had to push myself out of door as enthusiasm was waning badly. Only really though about the first 10 times and went on a different route almost making it up as I went along. Took new collapsible water bottle with me, which was quite cumbersome to start with but as then as the water inside decrease it got easily and light to hold, was taking a sip every three miles. Eventually got to 10 miles and nervously went passed Dog Nip cottage but he was nowhere to be seen!! Pushed on into second 10 miles but wind was more on my back now, which made thing’s feel easier. Eventually got the last few miles done and finished the run. At the end felt tired but not obliterated which I took as a good sign.

PM: Distance: 20 miles      Time: 02:44:52     Ave Pace: 8.15 m/m
