We went up and down the Leas so we had 3 into the wind and 2 with wind behind. Splits were as follows:- 5.42/ 5.49/ 5.56/ 5.59/ 5.42 so really pleased as these were all done on my own. (Average interval time 5.46) Cool down jog back to the club

Wednesday 27/03/13
AM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge
PM: Went down to club at Folkestone to go out for a long run the other guys were doing the Folkestone 10 on Friday and so were not going so far. I had decided to get a midweek 15 miler in, not really knowing what pace to do I thought I would just run how I felt. It was another freezing cold evening with quite a strong easterly wind, once I got going the first two miles round the by pass and up to the top of Wear Bay Road were 7.55 & 7.34, then its was down the hill and along the Seafront all the way to the Fisherman’s beach in Hythe, comfortably averaging about 7.15 m/m, then turning at the Light Railway Station it was then back into that strong cold headwind. Slowed a bit at the turn but then at the Twiss Road there was a runner the other side of the road who I felt was trying to race me!! This was a bit like a red rag to a bull, so I upped the pace again back to 7.15 m/m and began to drop the mystery runner.  It felt strange running along Seabrook Road on my own as usually I come along here with Tim.
As I was coming into Seabrook I spotted a runner ahead with a familiar style, finally catching him at the Murco Garage it was Chris Addison. He said that he was slowing a bit so we ran together and he was able to up his pace a bit, it also kept me going as well. Instead of going up Sandgate Hill we went along the seafront round to the harbor, here I left Chris and went up the Old High Street and back to the club. As I ran the last bit with Chris I had now done 16 miles instead of the original 15. I felt really cold at the end and the cold wind felt like it had got right into my bones.

AM: Distance:  6 miles       Time: 00:49:27     Ave Pace: 8.14 m/m

AM: Went out at 06:30 this morning for my two laps of Lyminge due to having to be down the Green at 08:30 to help with the setting up of the Folkestone 10. Very easy paced run.
PM: No run after having spent all morning standing outside marshaling in the cold I could not find the incentive to go back out in the cold for a run

AM: Distance:  6 miles       Time: 00:53:44     Ave Pace: 8.57 m/m
PM: Distance:  0 miles        Time: 00:00:00     Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m

Saturday 30/03/13
AM: Woke up with a SORE THROAT !!!!! Oh No.  So again was really sensible and took the day off. Only the 4th day in 17 weeks that I haven’t done any running. But now is the time to be wise and not jeopardise all my previous training. Looking as always on the positive side of things it was better to get the sore throat now and not in two or three weeks time!!
Also wanted to get another long run in tomorrow so again better to rest today ready for tomorrow.

AM: Distance:  0 miles       Race Time: 00:00:00      Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m

Sunday 31/03/13
AM: Long run with Tim, go to his house at about 09:00 and guess what? Yes it was trying to snow again!!! There was a brisk easterly wind but did not feel as cold as earlier in the week.  We did three laps of Radnor Park before setting out up Black Bull Road and pace was fairly steady as we warmed up for the long run ahead. Once we had got up the hill onto Churchill Avenue then the pace turned up a notch, I had to make a brief pit stop and Tim went on ahead, I then had to catch him up passing JT coming in the other direction. Finally caught Tim up along Cheriton High Street and it meant that I had to put in a 6.55 mile. The next couple of miles were ave 7.15m/m.  From 8 miles, which was half way down Hospital Hill the splits for the next 6 miles with the wind behind us were quite awesome 7.04/7.02/7.03/7.05/6.58/7.08.  It didn’t feel that hard but when I saw the 6.58 I was a little worried that I was pushing Tim too hard, however as we turned at 12.25 miles (Nickolls Quarry) we now had the full force of the wind blowing straight into our faces and knew that the pace would now slow. Then next 4 miles through Hythe we managed to just about hold onto 7.30 m/m but I could see that Tim was now beginning to suffer – he had also had a hard 10 mile race on Friday (whereas I had had an easy 6 and a day off yesterday). As we came off the canal bank in Seabrook we were now running into the wind straight off the sea and the pace dropped again to about 8.00m/m, at the far end of Sandgate as we were going onto the promenade we caught a glimpse of Kirsty and Angela ahead and this helped Tim as he now had someone to try and close down ahead. We finally caught up with them at the far end of the coastal park and at this stage we only had just over a mile to go. We pushed on and finally finished fractionally just outside 2h.30min but about 8 minutes quicker than a few weeks ago. Although the last 5-6 miles were tough it was good experience for the last few miles in the marathon when you are trying to hang onto your pace and not let it drop.

AM: Distance:   20 miles      Time: 2:30:23     Ave Pace: 7.31 m/m

2nd half of the week not quite how I planned as I was hoping to get a last 100 mile week in, however pleased that I got a long mid week run in. With regards to the sore throat better to get it now rather than in 2/3 weeks time.  Also fairly pleased with my run on Sunday, feeling quite strong therefore justify decision to have Saturday off.
Now only 3 weeks to go, it seemed a long time ago as I started before Christmas but it has shot round, so in the next three weeks will be tapering down the mileage but will be looking to keep the speed sessions sharp!

5 Weeks to go.........W/b 18 March 2013

Monday 18/03/13
AM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge
PM: Went down to Folkestone and ran with Tim Angela and Lucy we did very easy 6 miles, as the last club handicap is tomorrow

AM: Distance:  6 miles        Time: 00:47:33     Ave Pace: 7.55 m/m
PM: Distance:  6 miles        Time: 00:56:21     Ave Pace: 9.24 m/m

Tuesday 19/03/13
AM: Easy run 2 laps of Lyminge
PM: Last Club Handicap run of the season, went out and did about 2.5 miles warm up and drills and strides. Again I was last to go off with a 15-minute handicap a minute behind Fletch who I know is on good form at the moment. Went off at a fast pace and really tried to make the most out of the down hill section through the Golden Valley, 1st mile passed in 5.17, I knew this was good as on the last handicap I went through in 5:30 got to the bottom of Sandgate Hill and knew it has to be a good controlled run up here, go a little to fast at the bottom and you struggle at the top. So eased up first half of hill and then dug in from bend up to the bus shelters, cars coming down Coolinge Lane were a pain. At the top of hill really tried to push on, as it is easy to be a bit complacent thinking you are tired from hill and so you do not pick the pace up so much. Through the second mile in 6.14 again up on last time so I knew a good run was on the cards if I could continue to push on. About half way along Grimstone Avenue I spotted someone just going round the corner onto Shorncliffe Road. This helped as it was the first time I had seen someone, so still pushing I got round completing the first big lap and now only had the small lap to go. Up Audley Road I was starting to close down on the runner ahead and went through the 3rd mile in 5.48.  Went passed Will just round corner in Coolinge Lane and could now see two or three runners up ahead using them to work off I kept the tempo up passing them by the girls school, then fast downhill section to Sandgate Road and up the other side going past still some more runners. Giving it all I got going round into Grimstone for the second time knowing that I had just over half a mile to go, and went past Cads, there was a good line of runners ahead of me now through 4 miles in 5.38, just had to keep pace going over last 0.45 miles and I should have a good time, round the corner back onto Shorncliffe Road and I could see Tim ahead, I could feel him speeding up as I got closer to him ( I found out later that he thought it was Cads catching him up). Got passed Tim with about 400m to go and could now see Mick but could not quite catch him even though closing down on him all the way to the line.  Final time, by my watch 25:22, best ever round there in the last three years. I knew Fletch must have had a good run, as I had not managed to catch him and he had knocked about 2 mins off his previous best!!

Saturday 23/03/13
AM: Did my long run today as I am going to watch the Hastings Half tomorrow and I suspect due to the large nature of the race it will be difficult to get about.  Freezing cold morning with snow showers, it was a real struggle to get out of the door but once underway it was not to bad. Thankfully has taken a day off yesterday had proved the right thing today as I was feeling a lot fresher and the first mile was completed in 7.04. I wanted to try and maintain an even paced run this morning and then try and pick the pace up over the last few miles. They were all pretty constant only really falling a little bit on the hilly sections. Even the section for a couple of miles through Elham Park Wood did not drop off on the gravely and muddy surface. Didn’t get that usual tired feeling approaching 15 miles and still going along quite comfortably. The mile 20 was downhill and that got my momentum up so managed to plug a 6.54 mile in there and then tried to continue this pace on until the end which resulted in mile 21 6.55 and mile 22 6.42. So very pleased with that run as I was on my own as well, plus feel ok at end of run and not totally annihilated as usual.

Really pleased with handicap time on Tuesday the fasted I have been round it in at least the last three years. However was really tired on Friday and took the sensible option of a day off, which proved the right thing to do as was much fresher for long run on Saturday.
Next week will be last high mileage week before taper. Also looking to get some speed work in there too!!

6 Weeks to go........W/b 11 March 2013

Monday 11/03/13
AM: No Run Recovering from yesterdays race
PM: 16:25 - Went down to Folkestone as had a meeting at 3 Hills at 6pm. So wanted to get run in before meeting. It was like a blizzard strong easterly wind and hard snow, which was really sting face. Went round the Old Folkestone 9 in a clockwise direction so I got the wind behind me along the Leas. Pace was very easy and still felt quite tired from yesterdays race.
PM: 20:10 – After meeting managed to get out of Folkestone OK in the card but could not get up either of hills to Etchinghill. So left car in Lay by on A20, put my running shoes on and ran up over Tolsford Hill, experiencing some thigh high snow drifts on the way.

AM: Distance:  0 miles        Time: 00:00:00     Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m
PM: Distance:  9 miles        Time: 01:17:53     Ave Pace: 8.29 m/m
PM: Distance:  3 miles

Tuesday 12/03/13
AM: Got out to go and collect car from A20, went down road way past Beachborough to check out that the road was passible when I brought the car back. Easy running
PM: Club was cancelled due to weather conditions and lack of staff at 3 Hills. So went out with Lucy round Lyminge and Rhodes Minnis, roads were very snowy and icy. The worst part was coming down the lanes back into West Lyminge where the snowdrifts were blocking the whole lane and must have been at least 10ft deep. We could see footprints going over the top of them so we crawled and struggled down a 200m stretch before getting back to the road. Absolutely insane but great fun!!

AM: Distance:  3 miles      Time: 00:26:36                 Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m
PM: Distance:  7 miles      Time: 01:17:45                 Ave Pace: 11.06 m/m

Wednesday 13/03/13

PM: 16:20 – Intervals round Folkestone 9 course with a mile added at the end. 1 mile easy 1 mile hard x 5. Very please with mile splits, which were either downhill or on the flat, thankfully didn’t have any uphills in the hard miles. The 5 hard mile splits were as follows:- 6:18, 5:50, 5.46, 5.56, 6.03.

PM: Distance:   0 miles     Time: 00:00:00      Pace: 0.00 m/m

Friday 15/03/13
AM: Easy recovery run after last night interval session went out through the lans for a 10 mile spin
PM: Was going to 2 miles with Scouts on their sponsored run, but wind and rain was so strong that we aborted and did it inside, 230 laps of hut!! But I didn’t do it as I was recording laps.

AM: Distance:  10 miles     Time: 01:22:24     Ave Pace: 8.16 m/m
PM: Distance:  0 miles        Time: 00:00:00     Ave Pace: 0.00 m/m

Saturday 16/03/13
AM: We had decided to do our long run today as it was Lucys quiz night this evening and we thought it would be good to get long run out of the way so we wouldn’t have to worry about getting up to do it on the Sunday morning. Tim and I set off and did three laps of Radnor park and then on up Black Bull Road. We we in pursuit of Angela, Kirsty, Becky & Rachel who were doing 18 miles as opposed to our 20. We caught them up at Church Road in Cheriton and after a brief chat we carried on at our pace as we had further to go the other side of Hythe.  It was a SW wind so was quite hard work battling into until we got just passed Palmarsh Garage. When we turned it was nice to have the wind behind us but I was feeling awfully tired and couldn’t go any faster even if I wanted to, still tired from Thursdays intervals I think!!!  We finally caught the girls again coming into Seabrook and again after a brief chat we headed off again missing Sandgate hill and opting for the toll road and seafront. The last three miles were a real drag and it was starting to rain hard now, and I was starting to feel cold.  We made it back and it was good to get another one out of the way.

PM: Distance:  20miles       Race Time: 02:41:16      Ave Pace: 8.04 m/m

Sunday 17/03/13
PM: Went out on Sunday afternoon on my own to get a long recovery run in after yesterdays long run, it had been raining earlier but now luckily the rain and strong wind had subsided.

AM: Distance:   12miles      Time: 01:33:39     Ave Pace: 7.48 m/m

Due to snow and drifts at the beginning of the week, could not get done what I really wanted but very happy the mile intervals on Thursday. Managed to salvage a decent weekly mileage of 88 by the end of the week. Hopefully will get another decent higher week in next week and handicap will provide good time trial over 4.5miles.
